Another option is to have that cavity or cleaning done at a local dental college. Midwestern University Dental Institute is now open for business. You can get dental care at their clinic for about half the cost of a regular dental visit. There is an article from the Republic posted here.

Arizona Dental Insurance: The Bad News First.

For many individuals and families the cost of Arizona dental care is prohibitive, hence the need for dental insurance. The problem is that the only true Arizona dental insurance in the market is for employer groups, and that coverage is not much to speak of. With maximum yearly dental benefits averaging $1000 per person on dental insurance group plans, it sure doesn’t take long to reach the limit. Adding insult to injury, the yearly premium for true Arizona dental insurance, (as opposed to discount dental plans,) is nearly the same as the maximum benefit.

With more than 100 million people without dental insurance, the number of people with untreated cavities rose this decade. This reversed a trend of improved dental health for the last fifty years! For American dentists, times have never been better. Their fees are rising faster than inflation. Dental insurance companies must offset these fees with higher premiums. Despite the significant rise is untreated dental problems in this country, the American Dental Association has fought off any attempts at allowing hygienists and other non-dentists, such as dental technicians, from providing basic treatment to those who don’t have access to dental care or Arizona dental insurance. The number of dentists in America has remained basically the same in the last twenty years, around 150,000, while the population has risen by 22 percent. In 2004 the average income of a general practice dentist was $185,000 a year, and dental surgeons made around $400,000 a year. The average dentist is 49 years old. In 1982 there were 5750 dental school graduates, and today the average is around 4200. Less dentists, more people, and demand goes up, along with the cost of care. Finding Arizona dental insurance to cover these costs can be a challenge.

The Good News Relating to Arizona Dental Insurance:

TDAHP, (Total Dental Administrators Health Plan, Inc.,) has an excellent, affordable, discount Arizona dental insurance plan for all residents in search of Arizona dental insurance. There is no maximum benefit per year, no deductible, and you simply pay the discounted rate for care with the contracted providers participating in this discount plan. Pre-existing conditions are covered. Two free cleanings a year, and the discounts are substantial, averaging 30%-65%. A complete list of procedures and their costs, the participating dentists, of which there are many, and an online application are available by clicking here. The monthly premium for this discount Arizona dental insurance plan is less than $20.00 a month for individuals. I have used this plan, and I am very pleased with the coverage and selection of dentists. Please visit the Arizona dental insurance link on the home page for a complete outline of benefits, costs, providers, and online application. There are other plans offered as well through the dental link.
