Welcome to Michael Higgins Insurance, an independent Arizona health insurance agency that has more than 30 years in the Arizona health insurance industry and Arizona maternity insurance. We would like to introduce the Blue Cross Blue Shield of AZ Blue Portfolio HSA health insurance plan for folks who are planning on adding a new member to the family and wish to have Arizona maternity insurance.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona PPO’s and HSA’s do not include Arizona maternity insurance coverage. Complications of pregnancy are covered, though certain restrictions apply. Since pregnancy expenses are generally considered “Qualified Medical Care Expenses” eligible for reimbursement from a Health Savings Account (HSA), purchasing a high deductible, low premium, Health Savings Account qualified plan from Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona is a smart way to pay for the birth of a child. At Michael Higgins Insurance we like to say that HSAs are like IRAs for your health. You buy a high deductible, low premium health insurance plan, then deposit monies into a tax-free HSA savings account. When you need money to pay for your medical expenses it comes out of the HSA account tax-free. As of 2011, over the counter medications will no longer be considered a qualified medical expense, hence no more tax-free status. In most cases paying for the birth of a child this way will be less expensive than if you had a group plan that included Arizona maternity insurance, possibly thousands of dollars less.

Arizona Maternity Insurance

Here’s an example of how an HSA could work for your pregnancy as opposed to having Arizona maternity insurance. A family of three could save over $500.00 per month in premiums with a Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona HSA health plan. If a family puts the $500.00 of those monthly cost savings into an HSA savings account, in 12 months they would have $6000.00 saved for the cost of the delivery. This is tax-free savings, so it’s like having an extra $1980.00 in spending power (factoring a 33% tax rate). Instead of the Arizona health insurance company collecting the money in higher group health insurance premiums you are collecting the money, giving you the power to shop for the best care and price, tax-free!

Many local hospitals offer an alternative to Arizona maternity insurance. Purchasing one of these very affordable packages and paying for it with the funds in your HSA account may save you thousands of dollars. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona policyholder’s also have access to a cost comparison tool through their BlueNet online account. This tool allows members to compare pricing for maternity and many other medical procedures from most hospitals and facilities around the state. You may be surprised/shocked to learn just how much the prices vary from one hospital to the next, in some cases by thousands of dollars for identical procedures. The combination of having an HSA and an alternative to Arizona maternity insurance such as one of the maternity packages offered by local hospitals, adds up to substantial tax-free savings for you.

Arizona Maternity Insurance

If you are a company with two or more employees you may purchase a group plan which includes Arizona maternity coverage. Whether currently pregnant or not, BCBSAZ will cover the birth on a group plan. The downside is that group insurance is, on average, over twice the cost of an individual or family plan. Still, it is worth getting a quote on a group plan and comparing benefits and premiums with an individual or family plan. Arizona group insurance is very expensive in most cases no matter the company offering Arizona maternity insurance.
