600,000 In Arizona Losing AHCCCS Medicaid Coverage

Arizona Employers That Offer Group Health Insurance

Approximately 600,000 Arizonans will lose Medicaid (AHCCCS) coverage beginning April 1st, 2023, and ending in July. The federal government would not allow states to end Medicaid coverage for those that qualified for coverage elsewhere. Now that the COVID Public Health Emergency has officially ended states may begin cleaning their Medicaid roles.

Of the 600,000 Arizonans that will lose AHCCCS health insurance coverage, 240,000 likely qualify for employer group health insurance.
Those losing AHCCCS health insurance coverage qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, as losing Medicaid/AHCCCS coverage is a Qualifying Event. Employees that had AHCCCS do not need to wait until Open Enrollment to enroll in their employer’s group health insurance plan… so long as they do so within 60 days of losing Medicaid.

Of the remaining 360,000 losing AHCCCS, many of those will qualify for a subsidized individual or family plan on the ACA Marketplace or receive coverage through Medicare.
