Because there is only $5 billion dollars for the new federal high risk pool health insurance program, www.healthcare.gov, the government hasn’t ruled out turning away the sickly because funds have run out. The money is supposed to last until 2014 when all insurance companies are to accept everyone that applies.
Administration folk say that they can make changes to the program, or cut benefits, to stretch out the money. The lead actuary of Medicare states that the money will only cover two hundred thousand people with serious pre-existing conditions. That would leave hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, still uninsured. Premiums will range from $150-$1000 a month depending on demographics.
